I don’t do well in heat. Truth be told I would rather live on an iceberg with a polar bear most days. I can picture the conversations we’d have over toasty grande non-fat lattes from Starbucks. Of course this would be right before she ate me. But still – the weather would be just perfect.
A few weeks ago it was like 90 degrees and as soon as I walked outside I said “Oh my it’s so hot I just might melt!” Astrid looked at me and shook her head saying “Mom, you’re not a snowman!”
But wouldn’t it be awesome to be snowman? Except for when it’s over 90.
We are in Indiana this week and it’s hot. I mean hot. Like 102 degrees hot today. For a snowman this is not pleasant weather.
I’m someone who prides herself on complaining about the weather when it’s above 83. I’m the weird one who dreams about blizzards and new sweaters in the middle of July.
This is also why I didn’t live in Southern California very long. I missed the polar bears. And I remember when I got off the plane in Bangkok for the first time and wondered how I would ever cut through the heavy air.
So while I’m not truly physically melting, I am hot. And by hot I mean hot not hot.
And we are keeping cool in many wonderful and simple ways.
How are you staying cool this Summer?

i’m RIGHT THERE with you my sistah Snowman.

It was so bad here yesterday on the 4th that I couldn’t stay outside in the shade longer than 5 minutes. Luckily my husband went in the pool with the kids so I didn’t have to be outside.

It has been crazy hot here… like 107 with a heat index of 115! GAH! We’re pretty much alternating between the pool and the air conditioning… lots of movies and swimming.

Air conditioning and lots of freezie pops for the daycare kids!

When I rode RAGBRAI last year, the highs, every day, were between 99 and 104. I remember, at night, just thinking “dear god, please, make it cool, now.”
I find that drinking beer helps to make things a bit cooler — but, of course, that doesn’t help with the kids. Fortunately, my kids don’t quite know enough to complain. But, then again, they seem to really enjoy the hot (even if my daughter has my unfortunate trait of sweating profusely under most any circumstance).
To beat the heat, we’re wading in a kiddie pool most days . . . which the kids really, really, really love — and I’m trying to remember back to a time when I loved the kiddie pool (I’m failing, horribly). A real pool, that you could actually swim in? I’ve always loved . . . a slip & slide, I loved. A sprinkler? I had a love/hate relationship with.
But my kids love the kiddie pool, so it works. And I love beer, so it works.

I have AC that is constantly on at 73….
and you know, I can’t stop thinking of your post from the other day…Eloise is so lovely…and I’m not just saying that because I adore you…I really think that in a few years she’s going to blossom and not feel inferior to all the cute blondness around her…at least I hope not…

I would MUCH rather have this weather than snow and cold any time!! However, yesterday it was just too hot to play outside. We went to the mall instead…annnnnd I found the most amazing pair of Cole Haan wedges. See? Summer heat can be fun and fashionable, Tracy!
I live in Maine. We complain year round about our weather. If it’s above 80, it’s too hot. During mud season (it’s the 5th season here), it’s too wet. During the winter, it’s too cold and snowy. We just like to complain. You can join us, if you’d like.

I’m definitely not a snowman, but I can’t stand the heat either. It makes me cranky. I’m definitely a fair-weather person and by that I mean, literally, fair weather. Sixties and seventies forever, baby!
Looks like the girls are enjoying themselves. Enjoy plenty of iced-coffees, dear snowman!

And I could never live anywhere that it gets as cold as it does where you live. Snow terrifies me.
(I can NOT get my kids to slide on the slip-n-slide that way. They both slide on their knees.)

Don’t tell my boss but I’m sitting here freezing my ass off in this office. I would give my left nut to be outside right now.

Pools and popsicles are a great way to cool down! Yesterday in St. Paul, it was 104 degrees on my back porch IN THE SHADE! The 4th of July was fun but HOT. Mostly we’re staying cool with Central Air Conditioning! I’m sooo glad we installed it a few years ago. But a kiddie pool in the backyard is a good idea too! I think I’ll go to Target now.

I can’t stand the heat either but I also can’t stand the cold. Both make me super cranky. It’s been hot in NYC but not in the 100s. I basically don’t leave my apartment if those conditions. Pools, popsicles and slip-n-slides sound like fabulous ways to stay cool.

I am keeping cool by whining about how hot I am. Because whining makes hot hair leave my mouth and cool down my body.

That bubble-blowing picture is SO sweet it actually gave me a cavity just looking at it. I keep cool by screaming at the children to shut the big door every single time they enter or exit the house. And spending a fortune on air conditioning.

I love you more. I too am a Polar Bear and I live in freaking North Carolina and I die almost every summer. Oh my hot. I say bad things like hot as hell and my kids get scared. I shy away from fun things other people love. I might get a funny look when people say how much they love summer.
Let’s make an igloo together!

I am the opposite, thoroughly enjoying the heat. When I wake up and it’s 80, I smile. I go outside at lunch EVERY DAY. Coworkers who already think I’m weired now have proof. I couldn’t possibly care any less. At home, we have a few window units but we don’t use them until mid-July. I have to admit that last night we did bust out the portable a/c because yeah, sleeping in 95 degrees isn’t necessarily fun, but I guess the thing for me is: I don’t mind. I complain all winter long so I see it this way: rather than complain about being too cold AND too hot, I just choose. You’ll hear me bitch the minute there’s a breeze or temps dip below 65, but no matter how hot I get and how uncomfortable it is, I won’t make a peep because soon enough, I’ll need boots.
Oh, we are opposites. I don’t necessarily enjoy the 102+ that we get just about every summer day, but I start complaining if it dips below 60. Maybe even 70. But I do love fall and winter clothes.
I’m ready to move to Antarctica! I’m with you about the heat and I do live in Southern California and not near the ocean. Took us five years after we moved here to put in central air and I honestly don’t know how I did it before. Plus I like wearing clothes! And I think there are plenty of people around here who would look a lot better with more clothes! I moved here from San Francisco where as they say “the coldest winter you’ll ever have is a summer in San Francisco.” And oddly I actually have become a bit acclimated. I can’t believe that if the temp just stays below 90 I can be happy. Not cool happy but not complaining as much. Hope you’re cooling off!
Ahaa, its pleasant discussion concerning this post at
