Hugging Jill Smokler was a highlight of my trip to BlogHer this year. I wanted to thank her personally for giving mothers a forum where it’s okay to laugh and to cry and to swear and to make fun of and make light of but still…absolutely love motherhood without having to just display all of the flowery beautiful crap on our blogs.
I may have also asked Jill to be my sister-wife. She either declined or walked away politely and maybe bought me a drink. I don’t quite remember….
Anyway, Jill’s Scary Mommy blog makes me laugh daily and nod my head in agreement and makes me feel a lot less guilty for thinking how ridiculous some days are when you spend them mostly around small children.
But what I love most about Jill is that through her humor and her very honest take on motherhood – I see her love and passion there for raising thoughtful and compassionate children and it makes me smile and love her even more.
So when Jill announced that Confessions of a Scary Mommy was being published I said “every mother needs to read this book and know that everything will be okay even when you laugh behind your kid’s backs.”
And I knew Confessions of a Scary Mommy would be fabulous when I turned it over and the back cover told me I must recite these vows before reading:
1. I shall remember that no mother is perfect and my children will thrive because, and sometimes even in spite, of me.
2. I shall not preach to a fellow mother who has not asked my opintion. It’s none of my damn business.
3. I shall maintain a sense of humor about all things motherhood.
A to the freaking men.
Jill’s stories are heartfelt, honest and hilarious. Sometimes I feel like it’s almost a guilty pleasure reading her essays, as how does she know how I feel about motherhood and HOW does she say it all so honestly and openly? Every mother – new and old(like me) need to read Jill’s book and share it with a friend. It should become the go-to new mom gift for 2012!
And now it can be yours! Confessions of a Scary Mommy comes out on April 3rd and you can pre-order your copy here!

I have 4 kids ranging from 7 yrs to 12 months. By 5 o clock I am wondering what I could slip them to get them to actually go to bed early!! Please??!! I love them dearly, but this mama wants to lay in bed and read a book, or maybe even take a shower alone?? Calvin, take me away!
Hahaha Calgon. Not Calvin. Damn autocorrect! BTW I texted this.
Tweeted. F**k. See what my kids have done to my brain???
Can I have both of you as my sister wives?

I make them:
go to bed at a decent hour
read
eat good-for-you-food
eat dinner at the table – everyone!
be kind & help others
take piano lessons for at least two years
etc.
I don’t mind being a meanie sometimes & saying ‘no’.
Where was this book 5 years ago?? Sounds splendid. What makes me a scary mommy? Feeding my kids food that they are known to be allergic to. Yeah, oops. Thank God for Benedryl and Epipens!

I’m a very scary mommy if I can’t have my tea before speaking to the kids.

Hideous mother that I am, I routinely force tooth brushing, wiping of butts, and deodorant upon my offspring. You can almost imagine my horns sprouting through my graying temples…
I was also taught (shortly after the birth of my first), by my own ‘Scary Mommy’ that it was absolutely appropriate to “F@#k with Your kids”… You are supposed to make up ridiculous stories and lies and convince them they are true… to this day my 12 year old believes that each spring his grandmothers thumb actually turns green… (Green Ink well)
I’d love to read this book…
XO,

I’m a scary mommy because I, like a lioness, guard my children FEROCIOUSLY!
Let’s see where should I start…. I locked the keys in the car with the car running and my 2nd daughter in it while I took her sister into preschool.
I faked sick so I could stay home…. alone… while everyone else was off at school.
Really, I could keep on going.
I have two teenagers that have learners licenses and always want to drive with me- but when they do I yell, and rant, and am not at all pleasant. it is not fun for me at all. scary driving teenagers make me a scary mom!
I a so excited to read this book! Oh, and I’ve forgotten to buckle my children in their car seats. Yeah, nice.

Oh my list is too long to write here, but most recently I threw away my 3 year old’s Rapunzel plush doll when she wouldn’t take her eye drops (for Pink) after hours of World War 3 (I had tried every tactic, and that one didn’t work either, so I don’t recommend it because now I feel insanely guilty and I’ll probably spend the money to buy her another one).

I’m pregnant for the first time and I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. I teach elementary school and I sometimes look at parents and think, “Why?” Now that I’m going to be one of them… I’m thinking, “Oh dear…” So Scary Moms, watch out. Cause I’m next.
Once I took my daughter for a drive when she was about 5months because she was driving me insane, not wanting to nap… only when i returned home i realized the car seat it self did not click into the base (i know supermom), i never told my husband.
When my son hurts himself and cries i can’t help but laugh at him because he makes the funniest sad face i have ever seen (i of course give him a hug too)… i think i might be giving him a complex…lol but he looks so funny and cute!
I would love to win that book!
I have a 21 yr old (daughter) and a 10 yr old (son), if that is not scarry enough! My children always are amazed how I know what they are doing behind closed doors! Also me and my son like to sneak up on each other and scare the crap out of each other. My daughter joins in when she is around. But I sometimes feel guilty when I get him good!
As my kids were growing up my theory was always have as much fun with them and get them now because someday the tables will turn and they will be getting me…for my two oldest that is starting to happen..However God has given me another chance by giving me custody of a friends 14 year old…yes I am up to my old tricks…Love your tweets and would love to read the book!!
When I see my 7month old son’s crying face, my first impulse is to laugh, before I compose myself to comfort him. He just looks so funny!
You know what makes me a Scary mom today? Entering EVERY SINGLE one of these giveaways!!! Jill, next time I want to blog FOR YOU and do a giveaway too!!
baths once a week sometimes, yogurt & grapes for dinner, a movie instead of a book before bed. All of these things make me a SCARY MOMMY
xoxo
I’m a Mom of two; they are mostly grown at 20 and 18, but I can still proudly say that both kids and their friends think I’m a Scary Mommy: I freak them out with my all-knowing look; they think I really can read their oh-so-teenage minds. I show up when they least expect it. . .as they are putting beer bottles to lips, following them as they are speeding down a local road. . . bwahahahaha.
I read an excerpt of Scary Mommy’s book and I think it rocks. I would adore a signed hard copy.
And now I am off to tweet about it!

I am a scary mommy because I have no idea what I am doing and I’m trying to have another kid. I think I have a bruise on my forehead from banging it against the wall so much.
Sometimes I just have to laugh, right?
Cant wait to read this book.

I’m a scary mommy in more ways than I can count, and I easily identify with ScaryMommy’s site. I’ve already pre-ordered my book, but I know of a few other mom’s who could really use it!

I can’t wait to read this book. I’m not sure if I can think of any particular scary mommy things. How is this possible? How about when I ignored the kids for a weekend while I read all three of the hunger games? Was that scary mommy or bad mommy?

I’d love this book! I’m a mom of five kids in 4 1/2 years….that was not the plan! But I guess that makes me a Scary Mom. We are on the downhill slide now…they kids are 21, 18, 17, 16, 16. Only 3 left at home…soon to be 2! But we still have “Motherhood Moments” I can’t help but blog about.
Thanks for blog…I enjoy remembering life with Littles.

Yes, Please. I love Scary Mommy and often use the confessional to vent. Thanks for the opportunity.
Oh, P.S. I’m now a Scary Grandma. So much better because you get time off for good behavior!
I am a scary mommy because currently my son is surviving off carbs – cereal, waffles and oatmeal.
Where did my good eater go?!
My new favorite expression “a to the freaking men”.
one thing that makes me a scary mommy? Just one?
That feels impossible – as does a lot of this parenting gig some days – will this book hinder or hurt my parenting (or lack there of…)
I fed my girl cereal for Easter dinner…Does that count as scary? or just bad?
