I need a new opening line. My small talk lately with many groups of friends, relatives, my UPS man, and strangers on the street has become uncomfortable. I could talk about Tiger Mom’s or the Golden Globes and how I am pretty unsure how I feel about Sandra Bullocks bangs, and how now I question my move to bangs and perhaps I have it all wrong. I could talk about the shooting in Arizona or our new governor in Minnesota, or even more importantly about the new trenta from Starbucks and how whacked out that is. I mean I love my coffee and drink a pot easily in a day..but not all at once in a big gulp cup. Do existing car cup holders even hold these? Or how low do I need to hold my arm to drink and will my biceps look awesome after drinking one? Perhaps.
And gosh I could even bore you with talk of baby poop, cat poop or the weather this year(read: lots of snow and it’s cold), the cost of petrol or the incredibly long hair on Kanani the American Girl doll of the year and what mother is going to go super psycho alien trying to keep that shit brushed this year. (read: full time job finally resulting in a massive hair cut and child tears).
But no, those topics do not interest me because evidently I am approaching that fine age of “over the hill” and all I seem to be gabbing about these days in gas, bloating, holiday weight gain and that “not so comfortable feeling.”
Why, yes, I am going there…with your 80 year grandmother thankyouverymuch.
And my small talk with these subjects is not to bitch and moan. Oh, I do plenty of that – it is to share my 2 week journey from the past few years with hellish stomach aches, I should really sleep alone, and cyclical bloating to OH MY FREAKING GOSH – I AM A NEW WOMAN.
I know – totally too much sharing on my part – but LISTEN UP PEOPLE..
Do you know what this over the hill feeling broad did (people in their 20′s are asking their mothers what broad is..go ask, I’ll wait…)
1. I am a big water drinker – like 100 ounces a day easily, always have been..but I added green tea, cranberry tea and lemon juice to my water and you would NOT believe the 5 lbs of water weight I lost in THREE DAYS. I felt like my body was coming back. My bloaty feeling – GONE. Gas begone..no kidding! I am a believer and cannot believe I have not felt icky in almost 2 weeks now.
2. Cut out carbs almost completely – except oatmeal in the mornings and some carbs from fruit. My little muffin top like SHRUNK in 7 days – I KID YOU NOT. My clothes love me right now.
3. Exercise. I have been a runner for almost 20 years – but with family, etc..my running went from daily to 3x per week. I increased it to 5x per week and what a difference I feel. I also added some muscle toning – 150 sit-ups. 50 push-ups 200 squats everyday. Within 5 days I felt and could see the difference.
4. I am eating an Activia yogurt everyday. Now, I didn’t totally believe the claims either – but OH MY HEAVENS – it is true. You would not believe how good my insides feel. See, I am totally old that I want to talk to you about my digestive regularity. IT IS AWESOME!!!! Let’s not talk about my baby’s poop and my cat’s poop – Let’s talk about MINE!
So here I am with 4 easy things I am doing for myself and 2 weeks later, I stand before you as a new woman. Over the Hill..over the smill. Work with me people..and don’t walk away when I want to talk with you about digestive health, mkay?

Two words….Wonder Woman. I am in awe and really not worthy to be in your company, but you go girl!
The bloaty and farty thing I will be checking out. The running thing I will leave to you.
Thanks for sharing. Us old broads need to stick together.
Activia huh?
Dana
OMG you said farty on my blog.
Yes, not running unless I am being chased!
But you go girl, you are so going to be the Blissdom Beauty, of course I will have to get up real close to see your glow … eye’s aren’t what they used to be you know

Running is never my cup of tea.. but good on getting more exercise into your week.
You didn’t mention at what age you climbed over the hill. If it’s a real big one then you would only talk about your digestive health. I noticed that people over 70 only talk about that. I only have 3 years to reach this respectful age, but I swear I will never do that and rather talk about Madonna’s face lifitings.

WTG Tracy!!! Not bad for an over the hill broad;(

Good for you! Adding lemon to water is a little change… all that “e” word stuff is a BIG change, congrats:@)
I love your goals. I am over the hill and need to put your rules into practice too.

Talking about aches and pains and medical problems is kind of “old foggie”, but as long as you don’t fill the rest of your chats with the weather, I think you’ll be alright.

Note to self “when you meet Liz next week at Blissdom..do not talk about the weather…” xo
Good for you! I don’t mind one bit talking about digestive issues. In fact, I’m going to put into practice several of the things you have mentioned. I have recently (since last May) lost 25lbs and am at my thinnest since….mmmm…jr high perhaps? But I swear I can gain & lose 2-3lbs a day depending on regularity issues. It seems like all or nothing in my world. On a good day my size 4 pants are loose, on a bad day, I feel like I can barely put them on. And those days can be one right after another. Damn, I hate giving up more carbs, but if it must be done, then it must be done.
That is amazing Jaci. You are also inspiring me to train for another marathon next year I believe!
You should run Grandma’s…it’s in June….plenty of time to prepare. And I’m running it.
since there is no photographic proof of your so called “muffin top” I refuse to believe that you actually had one…

I have a question for you Tracy. How many miles are you running a week? I’m trying to decide how low I need to cut my carbs to make a difference. Right now I’m running 6 days a week with a total weekly mileage of 28-32. In addition I’m lifting weights twice a week.
Not that much – about 20-25 miles per week.
You don’t sound over the hill to me. I need to add the lemon to my water. Well, I guess first, I need to drink water…hmmmm. Run? I didn’t like to run when I was a kid, much less now. Not sure I can run, now that I think about it….haha. Well, I am cutting out most of the carbs….particularly at night. Oats for breakfast is my favorite too. I think you are doing well with being young.

I started losing weight a couple of years ago by cutting out toast soaked in butter every morning. I opted for a high fiber cereal instead. I love fresh fruit, but I learned that eating too much of it can give you stomach issues. I put my sweet little MIL on Activia when she was alive and staying with us, and I ate it myself! Because I have stenosis and scoliosis, I have to be careful about what exercises I do–my back is a mess. I am hoping to be able to get back in to walking every day, once the injection kicks in. Thanks for your comment on my post!!

Talk to me about the tea in water thing. Dh is eating a ridiculous amount of veggies lately (new diet) and um, let’s just say that the gas is prevalent. All of us at The Planet Pink would be forever grateful.

OMG I am laughing so hard. He must now have to sleep with the dog.
I will tell him to eat an Activia to regulate his digestion or something with an enzyme like that. The tea and lemon added to water reduces the bloating. How’s his bloat?
You have inspired me! I’m signing on to your new regimen!!
Thanks.

OMG! This post was too funny! But then, things are really only funny if there is a ring of truth to them, and I’m afraid we’re all going there. Loved your annotated portrait

Hi Amanda – It’s so good to laugh at ourselves and gas is always funny.
So I am going to try your suggestions. I got together with some friends over the holiday and we spent the entire time talking about how crappy we feel. I’m sending the link to my friends also….thanks!~
Thank you! You are so sweet!
um, I want to leave you a comment but it would inevitably be whiny.
But I love you and your skinny legs.

Go girl! Gluten is my evil …. eliminated that last summer and 20 lbs leaped off my body. Time to increase my running or other exercise to try and better combat the doughacious patches ….. I’m just wishing thinking about doing sit ups everyday counted.
BTW … running at 5am in MN in the winter …. seems like you should get extra credit (or mental health counseling
!
YAY Sahnya – you rock. Yes, 5am and -21 tomorrow morning. Hold me.
Yeah, you’re nuts. Most of my miles are on a treadmill lately. I may feel like a hamster on a wheel but at least I don’t have frostbite.
Running~ definitely no. Walking~ yes, when it warms up. Giving up carbs~ I need me my pizza. Sit ups~ I really really hate them. Push ups~ pure torture. Squats~ ouch, they hurt my thighs. Water & Activia~ I’m right on board with you sistah. You see, FOOD I can do.

LOL – baby steps.
Funny! I feel your past pain. I am working on the no carbs right now myself. I am working on more water in my day and less coffee. Oatmeal every morning here too. So far 4 pounds in the last 2 weeks, going for 20 by April. I have a goal. I’m way over the hill, I’m over 50.
Hi Brenda – That is awesome!!! You can do it! We are all very, very young. xo
LOVE your self made illustration – so realistic. We’ll talk about your intake, not about your output. Love all the comments. Take it from me – it’s a good thing to get a handle on that “gas and bloating” before it sneaks up! I am alergic to exercise, I’m pretty sure.
Cute. I know I’m allergic to exercise too, Ginny. I’m pretty sure. ;o And, if I’m not, I should be.

It has come to this.
I know. I know. I cannot even think about what is next.
I think I could manage the lemon in water, but the running…
I can quite relate to the conversational thing. I have no idea what will be left to me when our youngest Grand (I’ve been daycare for over 8 years now) starts to kindergarten this fall.
Reading over your four steps makes me realize how reasonable changes toward better health can be. This was a really inspiring post…well except for the cat pooh part -ha!
Thanks for an outstanding link this week.
