Brave

Eloise had a baby tooth pulled today. She’s getting ready for braces next month and this tooth was in the way. Do you have a child with a small mouth and rows of teeth now that their permanent teeth are arriving.

Yeah, I’ve got two of those plus and third with what’s sure to be the same issue once that first baby tooth falls out.

Anyway, even though my girls have some wickedly scary crooked teeth they are cavity and otherwise issue free.  So they’ve never heard the words “Novocain, laughing gas, extraction, and holy hell I have uncontrolled drooling!”

I prepared Eloise for her appointment this morning – how she would get some awesome laughing gas, some shots of Novocain and then the dentist would yank that sucker out quickly. I’m not one to sugarcoat things. I had many teeth pulled when I was getting prepped for braces so I was kind of a laughing gas junkie back in the late 70′s. I remember one time when I was about 11 I was in for my fix and when the dentist asked me how I was feeling I said “my race car is totally kicking ass right now – like I could beat anybody” and then I proceeded to move the armrest up and down like I was shifting my car. I remember my dentist telling me that maybe it was a good time to reduce my dose. Damn. I had that race in the bag!

When we arrived at the appointment Eloise told me to just stay in the waiting room because she could handle it all by herself.   She emerged a short time later missing a tooth and saying she didn’t even know it happened and was a piece of cake.

That’s funny because I remember crying like a baby.

When did nine become so big. So brave.

Love this girl – so it’s cereal for dinner for her..with maybe a little milk dripping down her chin on one side.

My oldest is embarking on the brace train later this year (after I get mine off because NO not at the same time as your mom THE HORROR). She was most indeed very brave to go it alone (mine had to have one pulled as well and sure enough, she dismissed me. Sniff).

It’s amazing what we “subject” our “babies” to for their own sakes. I also find it amazing that they are often much braver than we are. Thank goodness. I know my kiddo has been through so much already (2 oral surgeries & expander) yet he gets his braces on Monday and another oral surgery 6 weeks later. We have to force ourselves to be as brave as our children. Good luck to you all.

Did they actually use laughing gas on her?

I don’t think they do that anymore.

    DANG. The 70s were awesome.

When I was 8 yrs old, I had to have 12, yes 12, teeth pulled to make way for my new braces! And I didn’t get gas… just a shot and then a big PIERS! I can still remember the scraping sound and feeling of that piers as the dentist was jerking my head back and forth trying to get the teeth out… UGH!! Tell Eloise, it’ll all be worth it when those braces come off and she’ll have a lovely smile with beautiful straight teeth… :)

This is Duffy’s story, but I’ll tell it because it’s funny. Duffy had her first cavity when she was right around 30 . . . which is hardly bad. There was a deep crevice in a tooth, and shitty luck got her.

She made the appointment for the filling and called her sister, complaining that she had a cavity. Her sister laughed at her because “she was too old to have cavities.” I don’t know what my sister-in-law was thinking, but, apparently, in her mind, there was a magical time that just kept you from ever having to worry about tooth decay.

Anywho, my only tooth extraction was when I had my wisdom teeth out. It did not go well, even though they completely knocked me out (they had to wake me up in the middle because the laughing gas had forced a case of hiccups on me).

However, the very first cavity I ever had? I seem to recall playing with anything in arm’s reach while high on the laughing gas . . . that was great stuff.

This brave girl is going to look so cute in braces. The time of 70s was much different the dental procedures has changed a lot now. But the laughing gas is still awesome.

What a brave brave girl. I remember having many baby teeth and even 2 (I think?) permanent teeth pulled. My teeth were all kinds of crooked. Actually they still aren’t great even after two rounds of braces but I probably shouldn’t be telling you that, huh?

You didn’t wear your retainer did you, young lady? – At least I didn’t which is why mine are still crooked. (Please don’t tell my mother)

I had four teeth pulled for braces, not including wisdom, because I have a small mouth.

But …. but over here at least it’s no longer considered to be the wise thing to do. They widen your palate here to make the teeth fit because you can develop sleep apnea if your mouth is too small (you know where you stop breathing at night when you sleep). I have it and have to sleep with an oxygen mask. So my kids will not be having anything yanked – already discussed it with the children’s orthodontist.

    But your babe is brave.
