It was so awesome last week when we were walking out of Eloise’s classroom and Astrid, after being silent the whole time we were there, said “you know, I don’t really like Mr. Porter.” And instead of being like “OMG Astrid that was so mean!” I said “She SPOKE OUT LOUD IN PUBLIC!” And Mr. Porter was like “she is just so adorable that I think her sisters need to tickle her extra hard tonight.”
Astrid pretty much hates talking to anybody. But when she is home we cannot shut the girl up. And damn she is funny. And opinionated. And wordy. And pushy. Oh and two.
Anyway, all of my girls started out shy. Hiding behind my legs. Hiding into my shoulders. Making me talk for them.
It’s never bothered me. It’s normal.
So when they reach a point where they do talk to other people and say things in the company of strangers then I honestly will even take the rude things.
And correct them later.
Because having others see that this adorable personality exists and watching my baby girl gain confidence is totally worth it. Even with the mean words.
Because in seven years when Mr. Porter is her teacher…he’s SOOO going to remember that comment and then she will totally get hers. HA!
It’s never too early to learn that paybacks are a bitch.

Favorite photo prop. Remember this one last year?

I’m so envious she is talking! Monkey talks. Sort of. If you understand Monkey language. I do love when he says Oh no and thank you in the right context. Also, shit. Yes, I’m a fantastic mother.
I love that dress and her expression in that last picture is awesomesauce!

Seriously their little voices are so damn cute. I think Astrid has to talk a lot since her sisters never shut-up. Survival of the loudest. xo
My youngest is the same way. Will not shut up at home but when we are out, he’s mute. When he does speak, it’s usually in quite a bossy voice, you know, the kind that makes Mommy proud. Like today at pick-up when he made a girl cry by telling her no. Or yesterday when he said to his teacher, “You have to do what I say or else I will scream at you.” Awesome.

OMG so adorable. And hilarious. lol
Beautiful pictures, as always. I need to take a cue from you (sometimes the quiet/shy drives me crazy because my four-year-old has still been known to do it).
The dress? I love, I want.

Yeah, peeling a kid of your leg is never fun. But it will change. Eventually.
For the first six months my son was in school his teachers didn’t know he could talk. I am not sure they truly believed me when I told them he spoke a ton at home!
Your daughter is adorable, and you have it all in perspective. Love that!

I love this post. Beautiful photos and I love how you capture your daughter’s innocence while keeping it real about her speaking out in public and what she said. Really really sweet.

=) Bella’s only just starting to really start talking. She decided to master her climbing and coloring on walls skills first. Her favorite word is currently, “no” I just wish she wasn’t so darn cute about it when she says it!

Oh.my.cuteness! That bicycle IS the best photo prop ever! That last picture needs a prominent spot on the wall! Great pics!! And we also haven’t had a kid yet who doesn’t talk ALL the time at home…and most out in public, too, though some have been more shy than others at the start. Even baby Lucy tries to interject into the conversations now with her babbles & points. Love the upcycled bicycle dress, too!
She’s adorable, even rude and all! My daughter, who turns 6 next month, is silent as a mouse at school. At least that’s what her teacher says. At home it’s all Yode-alay-he-who! For whatever reason she’s yodeling a lot lately. A lot.
Maybe my girl can yodel while your girl rides a bike. They could travel the globe and make lots of money.
Hee!
I adore your girl, and your parenting.
(My kids started out shy as well. Oh my word, no longer.)

Oh my heart – I am salivating over the adorable-ness (I know, not a real word) in these pics. Your daughter is absolutely darling. And I say GO YOU – way to go for letting your girls be themselves, wether shy or expressive. Correcting a two year old for saying something adults perceive as rude would not be helpful to her coming out of her shell (though I may have done so with my first child – I lived and learned and figured out I was being whack).

Yes I probably did that to my first kid too. Oy.
That reminds me so much of Abbey. Her pedi would look at me like I had three heads when I assured her Abbey spoke a ton at home. I don’t think she said one word in the office until she was at least three.
I’m sure Mr. Porter has heard worse

Astrid won’t even look at the doctor. I can’t wear dresses or skirts when we go as she gets all up there and hides. lol
I LOVE this. She is such a doll and I love how you dress your girls.

If that trike ends up missing it’s because I flew up there and stole it. Oh and the little girl too. K needs a playmate.
Adorable.

Ha. Never too early for that lesson. My kids all talked early and often. But they’d talk TO people, then not respond. No one could ask them questions; they had to offer. They’d bound into a room full of sentences and the minute someone said “oh really” bam! Lips tight. If it was on their own terms, they weren’t shy, but if someone spoke directly to them…no. Weirdos.
If I have to tell you again the cuteness that is Astrid, even I’m going to tire of it. YET I CAN’T STOP SAYING IT.

“Oh, and two.”
That really does say it all, doesn’t it? Lil’ Bit’s “two-ness” has had my head spinning recently. I especially love it when she shovels half a plate of pasta in her mouth and then pauses to declare, “I don’t like this,” before shoveling in the rest. Or when I go in her room to wake her up in the morning, and she covers her eyes and whines, “Noooo, go ‘way, Mommy!” because she doesn’t want to get up.
That’s when I know it’s gonna be a fun day.
Astrid just oozes personality. Even in pictures.

Love your approach. My smallest pretty much just glared at people for the first two and half years of her life so I was thrilled if she said anything at all as well. Now the past 2 months or so she has finally come out of her shell. Having said that though I don’t know if I would classify her as shy more just cantankerous with a little bit of hoity toity thrown in.

I need to have two more girls so I can call them Astrid and Eloise…such beautiful names!…and I laughed: yes, payback is a bitch! However, that child is so gorgeous, I suspect Astrid will have Mr. Porter wrapped around her little finger. Payback is only a bitch if you’re ugly.
…did I say that outloud?

Oh,no wonder Astrid and Ivy get along so well. They have learned how to make us take notice of their comments when the do talk in public!
