Tween Girl Bedroom Makeover

It is just as disastrous to have the wrong accessories in your room as it is to wear sport shoes with an evening dress.
-Dorothy Draper

Two months ago I wrote about the beginning of our daughter’s bedroom remodeling.  Even BlogHer picked up the original story as our goal was to do it all on a very tight budget.

Well, we finished a few weeks ago and I want to share Eloise’s bedroom today.  I will share Esther and Astrid’s next week.

Here was the “before” room that Eloise and Esther shared for the past five years… and the original plan layout:

And here were some inspiration rooms that Eloise found:

We made a short before video on the changes we wanted to make…(Yes, I’m wearing yoga pants..don’t tell anyone.)

And here is the “after”…prepare yourself for the WOW. Also, peace out.

You will note that I did allow the peace signs to permeate the room. We are all cool here.

Benjamin Moore Paint Colors she chose:

Did we keep to budget? Well we did. Also we are grateful that we did this during Eloise’s birthday and Christmas as most of her presents were for her room which helped a lot with the budget.

- We spent about $100 total – which was spent on paint and pictures

- Eloise was gifted her sheets, comforter, bean bag and lamps from family(Shopped Pottery Barn Teen, Company Store, Garnet Hill, Target, Ikea)

- Everything else in the room we owned and re-purposed into her room

- Still to buy – a few pictures and window coverings

Eloise officially turned nine during the remodel. When I took the photos of her new room. And her.  I could see it in her face. Her eyes. Her smile. I could see this amazing girl growing up and now finally having a room of her own.  I am so happy for her.

Karly got a new comforter from PB teen for Christmas, too!

(Her room doesn’t look as cool and she still needs to go shopping. But other than that, we’re golden. Actually black and white. That’s what color she chose for her comforter. She already had purple walls and blue blankets. And good taste. Just not enough clothes. Clearly.)

and have you ever blogged about your girl’s names? they’re exquisitely old fashioned, except perhaps Astrid, and I wonder how you picked them

    • admin
      January 17, 2012 | 9:38 pm

Thank you! I have blogged about how Esther got her name here…(it’s worth the read..Eloise named her)
      http://sellabitmum.com/2011/02/27/queen-esther-2/

I named Eloise. Her middle name is Lorraine – which is my Grandma’s name and my mom’s middle name – so I wanted an old French name to go with Lorraine. I actually wanted her first name to be Lorraine but Jed nixed it.

Astrid is named after the Pippi Longstocking author. We love her books so much.

    Hey Tracy,

I am in the middle of redecorating my girls’ room. I am very slow, more than six months. I have a hard time committing to things like that; always afraid I will make a mistake.

The bedroom turned out darling; and they grow up so fast.

    Love,

    Your Utah Friend,

She certainly looks happy, and content. You did a great job with the remodel (I’m glad there weren’t any hot-glue-guns involved, or I fear that might have lead to a “no peace signs” rule).

I wish – all design is courtesy of my 9 year old. I need her to do my room now…

  42. Arnebya
    January 18, 2012 | 12:13 pm

I am so happy you were able to do this for her. I’m sure it means so much. I wish I could give my oldest her own space. At the very least I’d like to give them separate beds (they have bunk beds now DEATH TO THE BUNK BEDS FOR THEIR MOCKING OF ME EVERY TIME I TRY TO PUT ON A FITTED SHEET!).

The reason I love the room so much is that from how you’ve described her, it fits not just her at 9, but it’ll grow with her. Not too cutesy as Kristin says above.

Awwww, this brings such a huge smile to my face. There’s nothing quite like your first “big girl” room. I remember mine all too well (perhaps because I wanted desperately to not share a room with my younger brother any longer. Ugh, that was killer).

Love the colors she chose and the peace sign theme. A girl after my own heart :)
